March 13 Mahabubur Rahman, local lawmaker and former state minister for water resources, inaugurated the project during a ceremony held at Gondamari village, which was attended by many local villagers. Francis Bepari, Barisal regional director of Caritas, presided over the ceremony. Representatives of the Bangladesh Water Management Board were also present. The bag is prepared by mixing the grass seeds and the soil. The 62-feet-slopes of the embankments where the soil bags are placed are strong enough to protect the high level of tidal surge. According to the Water Development Board (WDB) the soil will settle gradually, said Joyti F Gomes, director of disaster management and development department, Caritas. The construction and renovation of embankments using green soil bags has successfully been conducted in the Netherlands and it was the first case of piloting the same in Bangladesh, Francis said. The embankment would become so green that it would attract people for roaming and cattle for grazing, he added.
